Aaron Allan Accessions

Archival materials donated by Laurie E. Jasinski pertaining to Aaron Allan and the Red Nickel Record Collection, dating 1947-2019. Aaron Allan (1929-2022) was a well-known disc jockey, prolific songwriter, and performer from New Braunfels, Texas.

Judy Alter Accessions

The Judy Alter accessions, spanning 1965-2015,  document the career of the author, noted for her works on women and girls of the American West. The collection includes manuscripts, drafts, galleys, research files, correspondence, reviews, and clippings, along with unpublished works and materials from her editorial work at Texas Christian University Press.

Antone's: Home of the Blues Collection
The SilverStar Entertainment Group Antone’s: Home of the Blues Collection spans 2003-2004 and documents the production and marketing of Antone’s: Home of the Blues documentary. The collection primarily includes production videos, marketing and publicity materials, and a VHS copy of the film that premiered at the South by Southwest film festival in 2004.

Mark Applegate Accessions

The Mark Applegate Accessions, 2007-2011, contains photographs, set lists, concert calendars, ticket stubs, and wristbands documenting Texas country music performances. Materials include photographs taken by Applegate at venues such as Gruene Hall, John T. Floore’s Country Store, and Cowboy Dance Hall, featuring musicians including Kevin Fowler, Roger Creager, Jason Boland, Pat Green, and others.

Bill Arhos Papers 
The Bill Arhos Collection of Austin City Limits, 1974-2002, documents the production history and artist lineups of Austin City Limits, PBS’s flagship music television program. The collection consists primarily of press clippings, publicity materials, and photographs. It also contains correspondence, galley proofs for Cliff Endres’s Austin City Limits book, and promotional items such as t‑shirts, hats, backstage passes, posters, and tickets. Brian T. Atkinson Accessions

The Brian T. Atkinson Papers document the work of the Austin author, producer, and record label owner, with materials dating 1956 to 2019. The collection includes posters, flyers, photographs, recordings, press materials, correspondence, lyric sheets, and artifacts relating to Texas musicians, concert series, and festivals, as well as research for Atkinson’s books on Ray Wylie Hubbard, Townes Van Zandt, and Kent Finlay.

Austin Film Festival Recordings
The Austin Film Festival Conference Recordings, 1994-2007, document the festival's annual panel presentations, awards ceremonies, and industry events. The collection consists primarily of audio and video recordings of panel discussions with television and film writers. Digitized material can be found here. 

Paul and Kitty Baker Papers
The Paul and Kitty Baker Papers document the careers and family life of Paul Baker, influential theater director and educator, and Kitty Baker, artist and educator, from 1911 to 1999 (bulk 1942-1976). The collection includes correspondence, scrapbooks, recordings, annotated scripts, clippings, photographs, ephemera, and publications. Materials highlight Baker’s theater work at Baylor University, Trinity University, and the Dallas Theater Center, his wartime service, and the Bakers’ contributions to arts and education in Texas. Marcia Ball Papers 
The Marcia Ball Papers, 1970–2018, document the career of blues and Americana musician Marcia Ball. The collection consists primarily of publicity materials, photographs, and posters, including newspaper and magazine clippings, promotional flyers, over 100 performance and portrait photographs, and more than 60 concert posters.

Neal Barrett, Jr. Papers
The Neal Barrett, Jr. Papers document the career and creative process of Texas-born author Neal Barrett, Jr., spanning 1941-1992, with the bulk from 1973 to 1992. The collection includes manuscripts, research notes, correspondence with editors, publication agreements, article clippings, reviews, photographs, and materials related to Barrett’s work in science fiction, westerns, comics, and other genres. Rick Bass Papers
The Rick Bass Papers, 1924-1994, document the novelist and environmentalist’s career, whose works include Winter: Notes from Montana and Ninemile Wolves. The collection includes manuscripts, notes, clippings, correspondence, photographs, and artifacts, organized into the series: Works, Clippings and Reviews, Writing Related Files, Environmental Concerns, General Correspondence, Personal, and Artifacts. 

Robert Benton Papers
The Robert Benton Papers, 1969-1994, document the filmmaking career of the Oscar-winning writer and director. The collection consists primarily of screenplays, notes, publicity materials, and production documents, including drafts of major works such as Bad Company, Kramer vs. Kramer, Places in the Heart, and Billy Bathgate. It also contains unproduced works, photographs, contact sheets, movie posters, storyboards, and set designs. Additional material can be found here. 

Sarah Bird Papers
The Sarah Bird Papers, 1985-1992, document Sarah Bird’s early writing career. The collection consists primarily of manuscripts, screenplays, and copy‑editing materials, including a romance‐novel style sheet, novel drafts for The Boyfriend School and The Mommy Club, multiple screenplay versions, and associated editorial notes. 

Jim Bones Papers
The Jim Bones Collection, 1965-1988, contains camera equipment, a portfolio of early photographic work, and color and black-and-white topographical photographs taken in Texas and New Mexico. Also included are page proofs, promotional materials for his photography books, and a copy of New Mexico Magazine featuring his work. The collection reflects Bones’ career as a nature photographer and environmental documentarian active since the mid-1970s.

Cindy Bonner Papers
The Cindy Bonner Papers, 1983-1999, document Bonner’s fiction writing and editorial process. The collection consists primarily of research notes, annotated drafts, and proof pages for her four published novels, Lily, Looking After Lily, The Passion of Dellie O’Barr, and Right from Wrong, as well as an unpublished manuscript and short stories. It also contains correspondence with editors, agents, and publishers, including acceptance and rejection letters, and a small personal artifact. 

Charles Bowden Papers
The Charles Bowden Papers, 1947-2007 (bulk 1970-2007), document Charles “Chuck” Bowden’s career as a literary journalist covering the environment, social justice, and U.S./Mexico border violence. The collection consists primarily of manuscript drafts, research files, and published writing, including newspaper reporting, magazine articles, essays, and book manuscripts, and also contains extensive correspondence, proposals, photographs, and digital media. There is particular emphasis on Bowden’s  Harper’s essay “While You Were Sleeping” (1996) and his subsequent border books (Juárez: Laboratory of Our Future, Murder City, Dreamland). Billy Lee Brammer Papers
The Billy Lee Brammer Papers, 1950-1993, document the life and work of the Texas journalist and novelist, best known for his acclaimed 1961 novel The Gay Place. The collection consists primarily of manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, and biographical materials, including typed manuscripts of The Gay Place and its unfinished sequel Fustian Days, along with newspaper clippings, personal letters, and photos. It also contains critical writings about Brammer’s work, as well as materials related to his personal life, including his marriages and his time as a staff member for Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. 

William Broyles, Jr. Papers 
The William Broyles, Jr. Papers span from 1962-2002, document the career of the magazine editor, author, and screenwriter. The collection consists primarily of personal and professional manuscripts, correspondence, and administrative files, including diary entries, typescripts of novels and screenplays, editorial subject files, and production notes. It also contains photographs, videocassettes, promotional materials, and research ephemera. There is particular emphasis on Broyles’s founding editorship of Texas Monthly (1972-1980) and his screenwriting for major motion pictures from 1993 to 2002, including Apollo 13 and Cast Away. Mark Busby Accessions

The papers of author, editor, and scholar Mark Busby span from 1937-2018, and document his work as a novelist, critic, and professor at Texas State University. Materials reflect his scholarship on the literature of the American West, his novels Fort Benning Blues and Cedar Crossing, his editorial roles with Southwestern American Literature and Texas Books in Review, and his tenure as president of the Texas Institute of Letters. Robert Calvert Papers 

The Robert A. Calvert Papers, 1970-1994 (bulk 1987-1994), document the scholarly and editorial career of Texas historian Dr. Robert A. Calvert. The collection consists primarily of annotated typescripts and page proofs of his collaborative book projects, including manuscripts and corrections for publications such as The History of Texas and Texas Through Time. It also contains editorial correspondence, grant reports, and consulting project files

Gary Cartwright Papers 
The Gary Cartwright Papers, 1981-2000, document the prolific journalistic and literary career of Gary Cartwright. The collection consists primarily of manuscripts, drafts, and galley proofs, including annotated typescripts for his books (Galveston: A History of the Island, HeartWise Guy, Blood Will Tell), screenplays and song lyrics (notably collaborations with Bud Shrake on J.W. Coop and Another Pair of Aces), and article drafts for Texas Monthly and other publications. It also contains editorial and personal correspondence, clippings, brochures, and a cassette tape. Sandra Cisneros Papers
The Sandra Cisneros Papers, 1954-2014, are divided into twenty-seven series that document her entire life and literary career up until the archives acquisition in 2015. The bulk of the archive consists of Cisneros’ extensive writings (notes, nonfiction, poetry, short stories, and monographs), correspondence, photographs, publicity, and letters from readers. Many other aspects of her career are represented through professional papers, publishing, awards, and organizational affiliations such as the Alfred Cisneros del Moral Foundation, the Macondo Foundation, and Los MacArturos. The 1997-1998 controversy over her purple house in San Antonio is also well documented. Additional material can be found here.

Tamara Saviano Collection of Guy and Susanna Clark
The Tamara Saviano Collection of Guy and Susanna Clark, 1965-2015, documents the lives and musical careers of Guy and Susanna Clark, with a primary focus on Guy. The collection consists primarily of research materials compiled by Tamara Saviano for her biography Without Getting Killed or Caught, including interviews, family histories, and magazine articles, along with donated personal materials from both Guy and Susanna Clark. It also contains correspondence, photographs, and other biographical ephemera.

Robert Compton Papers
The Robert Compton Papers, 1955-2008, document the career of Robert “Bob” Compton as the Books Editor and senior journalist at the Dallas Morning News. The collection consists primarily of professional and personal correspondence and newspaper materials, including letters from authors and reviewers (including Jim Lehrer, Larry McMurtry, Rick Bass, and William Goyen), staff memos, and newspaper clippings. It also contains photographs, cassette tape recordings, and newspaper and magazine issues. Additional material can be found here.

Kay Council Papers
The Kay Council Papers, 1987-1989, document folklorist Kay Council’s research into Texas-Mexican curanderas (women folk healers). The collection consists primarily of a typescript of her unpublished manuscript, interview recordings, and correspondence. It also contains photographs related to her fieldwork. 

Elizabeth Crook Papers 
The Elizabeth Crook Papers, 1984-2000, document the research and writing career of historical novelist Elizabeth Crook. The collection consists primarily of research notes, annotated typescripts, correspondence, and clippings, including draft manuscripts for Raven’s Bride and Promised Lands, editorial letters with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and reviews of Crook’s work. It also contains photographs and mailing lists used for publicity. Additional material can be found here. 

Hondo Crouch Collection 
The Dennis Lee McCullough Collection of Hondo Crouch, 1938-1993 (bulk: 1965-1985), documents the life and legacy of Texas humorist and self-proclaimed mayor of Luckenbach, Texas, Hondo Crouch. The collection consists primarily of correspondence, research notes, and newspaper clippings, including letters from Crouch’s friends and family and numerous columns from his “Cedar Creek Clippings” series published in The Comfort News. It also includes articles related to Crouch and the Terlingua Chili Cook-off, an unpublished manuscript of Thank You, Sir, and two boxes of audio cassette tapes containing interviews with individuals who knew Crouch.

James Crumley Papers
The James Crumley Papers, 1965-1992, document the prolific writing career of novelist and screenwriter James Crumley. The collection consists primarily of manuscripts, galley proofs, notes, and correspondence, including draft chapters of his crime novels (The Wrong Case, The Last Good Kiss, Dancing Bear), short story typescripts, and fan and professional letters. It also contains legal papers, photographs, poetry typescripts, screenplays (both produced and unproduced), clippings, and personal artifacts. Additional material can be found here. 

Dudley Dobie Collection
The Dudley Dobie, Sr. Collection, 1917-1980, documents the literary, historical, and political interests of Texas bookseller, writer, and regional historian Dudley Dobie, Sr. The collection consists primarily of correspondence, manuscripts, research notes, and bookstore records, including personal letters, published and unpublished writings, and materials related to historical research and Texas literary culture. It also contains photographs, memorabilia, signed publications, and ephemera related to Texas politics and education.

J. Frank Dobie Papers
The J. Frank Dobie Papers, 1898-1988 (bulk: 1914-1964), document the literary work, public engagement, and personal life of J. Frank Dobie, a prominent Texas folklorist, writer, and educator. The collection consists primarily of manuscripts, research materials, correspondence, photographs, and personal papers, including drafts of Dobie’s books and columns, lecture notes, magazine articles, personal letters, teaching materials, and items related to his involvement with the Texas Folklore Society. It also contains artifacts, audiovisual materials, family papers, and an extensive collection of newspaper clippings. 

Nadine Eckhardt Papers
The Nadine Eckhardt Papers, circa 1920s-2009 (bulk: 1944-2009), document the personal and professional life of Nadine Eckhardt, writer, political insider, activist, and memoirist. The collection includes correspondence, photographs, personal papers, printed material, and drafts of her memoir, Duchess of Palms. 

Dan Flores Papers
The Dan Flores Papers, 1989-1991, document the work of historian Dan Flores, a leading voice in the environmental history of the American West. The collection includes a typescript of Flores’s 1991 speech “Texans and the Land”, delivered at the Texas State Historical Association meeting, and two published articles: “The Plains and the Painters” and “The Ecology of the Red River in 1806.” 

Robert Flynn Papers
The Robert Flynn Papers, 1950-1971, document the early literary and professional career of Texas novelist, playwright, and journalist Robert Flynn. The collection reflects Flynn’s creative and personal journey from Baylor drama student to writer and war correspondent. Materials include drafts, notes, correspondence, photographs, and ephemera from both his fiction writing and journalistic work in Vietnam. Highlights include Flynn’s theatrical script Journey to Jefferson, adapted from William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying, and a typescript of Flynn’s debut novel North to Yesterday. 

Wick Fowler Collection
The Wick Fowler Papers, 1944–1991 (bulk 1944–1945, 1965–1978), document the career of journalist and chili enthusiast Wick Fowler. The collection highlights Fowler’s reporting on World War II, the Vietnam War, and other subjects, as well as his instrumental role in promoting Texas chili culture - including the Terlingua chili cook-off, the Chili Appreciation Society International, and the development of 2-Alarm Chili. Materials include clippings, writings, photographs, artifacts, and personal notes. 

Ian Frazier Papers 
The Ian Frazier Papers, 1960-1987 (bulk: 1980-1987), document the creation of Frazier’s 1983 biographical essay on Texas State University alum Ponce Cruse Evans, known for continuing the syndicated advice column “Hints from Heloise.” The collection consists primarily of books, manuscripts, galleys, and handwritten notes, including drafts and research materials for the essay “Nobody Better, and Better than Nobody.” It also contains photographs, sheet music, and clippings related to both Ponce Cruse Evans and her mother, Heloise Cruse. 

Dagoberto Gilb Papers
The Dagoberto Glib Papers, 2000-2001, document annotated drafts, typescripts, and correspondence relating to an essay by Gilb which was commissioned by Texas Monthly in 2000. The magazine declined to publish the story as Gilb envisioned it, and it was later published in Harper’s as “Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes: A Pocho Tours Mexico” in June 2001.  

Fred Gipson Papers
The Fred Gipson Papers, 1948–1957, document the work of Texas novelist and journalist Fred Gipson, best known as the author of Old Yeller (1956). The collection comprises drafts of short stories, screenplays, and a nonfiction autobiographical piece, primarily in the form of annotated typescripts and final drafts. Materials are arranged by genre and, when possible, chronologically. Of particular significance is the 1957 shooting script for the Walt Disney film adaptation of Old Yeller. 

Albert Goldbarth Papers 
The Albert Goldbarth Papers, 1978-1980, consist of handwritten drafts of Different Fleshes, winner of the 1980 Voertman Poetry Award from the Texas Institute of Letters. The materials are housed in two spiral-bound notebooks and also include several loose sheets and one newspaper clipping dated 1978. 

Jovita González Mireles Papers
The Jovita González Mireles Papers, 1921–1993 (bulk 1930–1975), document the educational, professional, and personal lives of South Texas educators and bilingual education advocates Jovita González Mireles and her husband Edmundo E. Mireles. The collection consists primarily of printed materials, correspondence (including letters between the couple), handwritten notes, and photographs. Additional materials include personal journals, inscribed publications, financial and legal records, artifacts, sound recordings, and books. Notable items highlight Mireles’s literary achievements and her active role in the Texas Folklore Society. 

John Graves Papers 
The John Graves Papers, 1920-2006, document the literary career and personal life of Texas author John Graves. The collection consists primarily of manuscripts, correspondence, and photographs, including annotated drafts of Goodbye to a River, Hard Scrabble, and From a Limestone Ledge, as well as letters exchanged with fellow writers, editors, and family. It also contains journals, scrapbooks, clippings, artifacts, and writings by others. Additional material can be found here

A. C. Greene Papers
The A.C. Greene Papers, 1967-1973, document the literary career of Texas author, journalist, and editor Alvin Carl Greene. The collection is comprised of seven folders of manuscripts, published materials, photographs, correspondence, cards, and event programs. Highlights include multiple annotated drafts of the essay “Paisano” and Greene’s screenplays adapted from his books The Last Captive and The Santa Claus Bank Robbery. R. S. Gwynn Papers
The R. S. Gwynn Papers, 1976-1994, consist of annotated typescripts and page mock-ups for three of Gwynn’s published books of poetry, Bearing & Distance, The Narcissiad, and The Drive In, as well as a poem composed for a wedding ceremony.

Lee Hancock Collection 
The Lee Hancock Collection, 1975–2004 (bulk 1993–2000), documents media coverage, government investigations, and public response to the 1993 Branch Davidian standoff near Waco, Texas, and its aftermath. The collection primarily comprises government documents, news clippings, and research files, including FBI logs, ATF reports, press releases, trial transcripts, and annotated articles by journalist Lee Hancock. Additional materials include publications, audiovisual recordings, and digital files. 

Doug Hanners Collection
The Doug Hanners Collection, 1947-2011 (bulk: 1950s-1970s), documents the development of blues, rock and roll, and country music, with a strong emphasis on artists and scenes from the eastern and coastal regions of Texas. The collection consists primarily of photographs, artist files, and music industry documents, including materials related to record companies, radio stations, and music publications. It also contains artifacts, posters, recordings, rock/grunge flyers, and oversized promotional materials. Digitized materials can be found here.

Susan Hanson Collection
The Susan Hanson Collection, 1984-1992, is comprised primarily of photocopies of newspaper articles written by Hanson, staff writer for the San Marcos Daily Record. Many articles are accompanied by notes and brief correspondence from the subject of the articles.  

John Wesley Hardin Papers
The John Wesley Hardin Collection, 1874-1931 (bulk: 1874-1895) contains correspondence, legal documents, financial papers, and family photographs documenting the life of John Wesley Hardin (1853-1895), a notorious Texas outlaw, gunfighter, and later practicing attorney. The bulk of the material dates from Hardin’s period of arrest, trial, and imprisonment (1877-1894), and includes first-hand accounts of key events such as the killing of Deputy Sheriff Charles Webb, the death of Hardin's family members, and his legal and political disputes in post-Reconstruction Texas.  

Stephen Harrigan Papers 
The Stephen Harrigan Papers, 1971-2000, document the professional writing career of the Texas author, journalist, and screenwriter. The collection consists primarily of manuscript drafts, research notes, galley proofs, correspondence, clippings, photographs, and screenplays that trace the development of Harrigan’s published books, articles, and teleplays. His contributions to Texas Monthly are well-documented, as are his books: Aransas, Jacob's Well, and The Gates of the Alamo. Additional materials can be found here. 

William Hauptman Papers 
The William Hauptman Papers, 1956-1993, document the career of the Texas-born playwright and novelist, best known for the Tony Award-winning Big River. The collection includes drafts, manuscripts, correspondence, and notes related to his plays, teleplays, fiction, and journalism. Highlights include early writings, materials from Big River, and annotated photographs of Hauptman’s family and Texas landscapes.  

Shelby Hearon Papers
The Shelby Hearon Papers document the creative process of the novelist from 1983 to 1992. Materials include notes, drafts, galley proofs, and clippings related to her novels Afternoon of a Faun, Group Therapy, Five Hundred Scorpions, Owning Jolene, Hug Dancing, and Friends for Life. 

Ramon Hernandez Tejano Music Collection
The Ramón Hernández Tejano Music Collection, 1922–2019 (bulk: 1985–2019), documents the history, business, and cultural impact of Tejano, conjunto, and orquesta music, with an emphasis on Texas artists and representation from across the U.S. and internationally. Compiled by journalist, photographer, and publicist Ramón Hernández, the collection reflects his decades of chronicling and promoting Tejano musicians. Materials include publicity files, photographs, audiovisual recordings, ephemera, media coverage, and Hernández’s research and writings. 

Jesse Herrera Photographs Collection
The Jesse Herrera Photograph Collection spans from 1987 to 2007 and is organized into seven series by location. The collection includes 87 black-and-white and color photographs that document religious and cultural traditions in Mexico, Spain, Guatemala, and the United States. Hispanic Magazine Archives
The Hispanic Magazine Archives, spanning 1994-1995, contains documents relating to the production of issues from September 1994 to December 1995. Within this collection are annotated drafts, page proofs, research material, correspondence, press releases, press kits, newspaper clippings, and photographs. 

Wilson Hudson Collection
The Wilson Hudson Collection, 1949-1996, consists of his papers and includes off-prints, manuscripts and drafts, correspondence, photographs, newspapers, obituaries, and personal papers. There is also a substantial amount of material relating to the Texas Folklore Society. 

Wilson Mathis Hudson Papers
The Wilson Mathis Hudson Collection spans from 1913 to 1991 and is organized into three series. The collection documents Hudson’s scholarly work in Southwestern literature and folklore, with a focus on cowboy writer Andy Adams, folklorist J. Frank Dobie, and the activities of the Texas Folklore Society. Materials include manuscript drafts, correspondence, photographs, note cards, maps, genealogical notes, and printed ephemera.  

Mary Gray Hughes Collection
The Mary Gray Hughes Collection spans 1977 to 2002 and documents the creation and publication of Hughes’s short story collection, Cora’s Seduction and Other Stories (Puckerbrush Press, 2002). The collection includes personal papers, correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, computer disks, and multiple drafts of Hughes’s fiction, poetry, and editorial letters. Correspondence with editor James Kelman is especially notable and includes related press clippings.  

It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll Collection
The It’s Only Rock ’N’ Roll Collection spans 1978 to 1982 and documents the rise of punk, New Wave, and regional rock scenes in San Antonio and Austin through a pioneering indie music newspaper. Founded by journalist and songwriter Ron Young, the publication featured interviews, record reviews, guest columns, concert listings, and photography covering both national acts, such as Blondie, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, and the Ramones, and local blues, heavy metal, and rock ’n’ roll bands. The collection includes 44 issues, digitized and accessible online, offering a grassroots chronicle of a vibrant musical era in Central Texas. Digitized materials can be found here

Mary Sue Jones Papers
The Mary Sue Jones Papers, 1931-1992 (bulk: 1960-1989) document the life and career of an actress, director, designer, and educator whose work shaped Texas and New Mexico theater from the 1950s through the 1990s. The collection includes teaching materials, scripts, set and costume designs, correspondence, photographs, production files, and personal mementos. The Texas series reflects her involvement in Baylor and Trinity Universities, and her leadership at the Dallas Theater Center alongside mentor Paul Baker. The New Mexico series chronicles her later work at the College of Santa Fe and her efforts to honor Baker’s legacy.  

Preston Jones Papers
The Preston Jones Papers, 1940-1988 (bulk: 1963-1979) document the life and career of the playwright. Best known for A Texas Trilogy, Jones’s archive includes scripts, production materials, correspondence, photographs, press, awards, and personal memorabilia. The collection reflects his early life in New Mexico, his work with Paul Baker at Baylor, Trinity, and the Dallas Theater Center, and his rise as a recognized playwright. 

Clyde Kimsey Collection 
The Clyde Kimsey Collection documents punk, new wave, and rock artists performing in San Antonio and Austin from 1977 to 1990. The archive includes 281 images, many published in It’s Only Rock and Roll, an indie music newspaper self-published by Ron Young from March 1978 to April 1982. Kimsey, a contributing photographer and writer, captured live performances and artist portraits, featuring acts such as the Ramones, Blondie, Judas Priest, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and others. Sam Kindrick Papers 
The Sam Kindrick Papers document the career of the Texas journalist, photographer, and publisher best known for founding Action Magazine and chronicling the outlaw country scene from San Antonio. Spanning 1934-2018, the collection is arranged into three series: Photographs, Personal Papers, and Action Magazine Records. The bulk consists of approximately 4,000 photographs of musicians, performers, and Texas cultural figures featured in Action Magazine (1975-2018), including Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Kinky Friedman, and others. Also included are Kindrick’s “Offbeat” columns from the San Antonio Express-News (1968-1974), a near-complete run of Action Magazine, and a variety of ephemera related to the regional music and cultural scenes. King of the Hill Archive/Jim Dauterive Papers
The King of the Hill Archives document the creation, writing, and production of the Emmy Award-winning Fox television series from 1995 to 2007. Organized in seven series, the collection includes scripts, production files, marketing and publicity materials, photographs, audiovisual media, and artifacts. The bulk of the archive consists of episode files featuring multiple script drafts, storyboards, and production notes - especially for episodes by writer and donor Jim Dauterive - as well as detailed records for the pilot and early seasons. Additional materials include animation sketches, character portraits, promotional items, whiteboards from the writers’ room, in-studio photographs, casting notes, and reference books consulted by the creative team.

Larry L. King Papers
The Larry L. King Papers, 1929-1993 (bulk: 1957-1993) document the life and career of the writer and playwright through manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, and memorabilia. Key materials include drafts and proofs of his books and plays (notably The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas), articles for major magazines, television scripts, song lyrics, speeches, and personal records. His extensive correspondence with fellow writers, friends, and public figures is a highlight. 

Nancie Austin Collection of Edith Hamilton Kirkland 
The Nancie Austin Collection of Elithe Hamilton Kirkland is comprised of handwritten and typed letters from Texas author Elithe Hamilton Kirkland to friend Nancie Austin, of Wimberley, Texas. The letters date from 1979-1983, and relate to the friendship between Kirkland and Austin, and to the development of Kirkland’s novel, The Edge of Disrepute, published in 1984.

Elithe Hamilton Kirkland Papers 
The Elithe Hamilton Kirkland Papers document the literary and personal life of the Texas author, with materials spanning 1910–1991. The collection includes correspondence, drafts, typescripts, notes, photographs, scrapbooks, artifacts, ephemera, and clippings. Highlights include extensive working drafts of published and unpublished writings, family correspondence, photographs, and material related to Kirkland’s interest in J. Frank Dobie. The collection also contains awards, biographical notes, speaking engagement files, and subject research. 

Joe R. Lansdale Papers
The Joe R. Lansdale Papers, 1985–1992, document the writing career of the Texas author. The collection includes manuscripts, galley proofs, comic book art, scripts, interviews, and realia, representing Lansdale’s novels, short stories, comic and teleplay scripts, anthologies, and editorial contributions. Materials reflect both Lansdale's original works and adaptations by other writers, with a focus on his horror, science fiction, western, and mystery writings. Jean Lee Papers
The Jean Lee Papers, 1954-2003 (bulk: 1996), document the life of journalist Jean Lee, wife of photographer Russell Lee. The collection consists primarily of correspondence, both personal letters from friends and materials related to her estate, as well as funeral and memorial papers, legal documents, and personal artifacts.

Russell Lee Papers
The Russell Lee Papers, 1881-1992 (bulk: 1936-1965), document the life and work of photographer Russell Lee through photographs, correspondence, personal and legal documents, artifacts, paintings, and publications. The collection consists primarily of photographic prints and personal documents, including Lee’s FSA (Farm Security Administration) field notebooks, family records, and letters from Jack Hurley related to his biography of Lee. Retracing Russell Lee Project 
The Francine Carraro / Eric Weller "Retracing Russell Lee" Project Collection, 1991-1993, documents a Texas State University project that revisited the communities of Pie Town, New Mexico, and San Augustine, Texas, fifty years after Farm Security Administration photographer Russell Lee’s Depression-era work there. The collection includes oral history recordings and transcriptions, photographs, videotapes documenting the project, exhibit catalogs, and exhibit text panels.  Digitized materials can be found here

Grover Lewis Papers 
The Grover Lewis Papers, 1955-2005, document the life and career of the acclaimed journalist, essayist, and critic through personal papers, correspondence, published and unpublished writing, works by others, audio recordings, and photographs. Highlights include correspondence with figures such as Hunter S. Thompson, Joan Didion, and Marlon Brando; drafts of published and unfinished works, including Code of the West; and extensive materials from his time at Rolling Stone, including interviews, notes, and personal artifacts. Pat LittleDog Papers 
The Pat LittleDog Papers, 1954-1984, document the life and literary career of the Texas-born novelist, short story writer, and journalist. The collection includes diaries from her teenage years in Germany, correspondence, published journals, personal artifacts, and typescripts - primarily for How It Happened That I Came to Live in the West. 

Lonesome Dove Archive
The Lonesome Dove Production Archive documents the development and production of the Emmy Award-winning 1989 CBS miniseries based on Larry McMurtry’s novel. The collection includes screenplays, production records, correspondence, notes, set and costume designs, blueprints, photographs, audiovisual materials, props, costumes, publicity files, and awards documentation. Highlights include multiple screenplay drafts by Bill Wittliff as well as his on-set photography. 

Beverly Lowry Papers
The Beverly Lowry Papers,1950-1998, document the author’s writing career and personal life through annotated typescripts, correspondence, journals, clippings, photographs, and other materials. The collection focuses primarily on four of her published works, Daddy’s Girl, The Perfect Sonya, Crossed Over, and The Track of Real Desires, with Crossed Over especially well-represented through extensive research files and correspondence with Karla Faye Tucker. Maury Maverick, Jr. Papers
The Maury Maverick Jr. Papers, 1920-2003, document the life and work of the Texas lawyer, legislator, activist, and columnist. The collection includes printed material, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, awards, and personal files, with particular emphasis on his later career. Materials are organized into series covering photographs, correspondence, biographical material, Maverick’s writings, and his interest in Middle Eastern politics. Highlights include family photographs, correspondence with political figures, and writings for the San Antonio Express-News. 

Cormac McCarthy Papers 
The Cormac McCarthy Papers, 1964–2007, document the literary career of acclaimed American author Cormac McCarthy. The collection consists of drafts, notes, correspondence, research materials, proofs, and production files for all of McCarthy’s published novels, plays, and screenplays, as well as select unpublished works. Highlights include early drafts and revisions of Suttree, Blood Meridian, All the Pretty Horses, The Road, and others, all of which preserve McCarthy’s page-numbering and annotation practices. 

Cormac McCarthy Drafts 
The Cormac McCarthy Drafts Collection was the initial donation from McCarthy to Bill Wittliff, which predates the 2007 acquisition of the Cormac McCarthy papers. It contains a typescript of the play The Stonemason and typescripts of two screenplays: Cities of the Plain and Whales and Men. Both screenplays in this collection are unpublished. 

Perspectives on Cormac McCarthy
The Perspectives on Cormac McCarthy Collection, 1991-1993, contains drafts, proofs, and correspondence related to Perspectives on Cormac McCarthy, a 1993 volume of essays edited by Edwin “Chip” Arnold and Dianne Luce and published by the University Press of Mississippi. Highlights include annotated drafts and proofs of essays by various contributors, as well as editorial correspondence with authors and the publisher. 

The Dale L. Walker Collection on Cormac McCarthy
The Dale L. Walker Collection on Cormac McCarthy, 1992-1998, contains materials on Cormac McCarthy and his work, including magazines, various newspaper clippings, photocopies of work and reviews, and printouts from the “Cormac McCarthy Home Pages." 

Richard B. Woodward Collection of Cormac McCarthy
The Richard B. Woodward Collection of Cormac McCarthy, 1985-2022, includes correspondence, notes, drafts, and three audiocassette tapes related to Woodward’s interview with Cormac McCarthy, which formed the basis of his influential 1992 New York Times profile, “Cormac McCarthy’s Venomous Fiction.” 

J. Howard Woolmer Collection of Cormac McCarthy
The J. Howard Woolmer Collection of Cormac McCarthy, 1969-2006, documents the decades-long correspondence and collecting relationship between bibliographer J. Howard Woolmer and author Cormac McCarthy. The collection includes over 120 letters exchanged between the two men, along with photocopied drafts of McCarthy’s novels, plays, and screenplays; published writings about McCarthy; and Woolmer’s research files for a potential McCarthy bibliography. 

James McMurtry Papers 
The James McMurtry Papers, 1984-2021, document the career of the Texas singer-songwriter through handwritten song lyrics, personal notes, business records, photographs, press clippings, and audiovisual materials. The collection is arranged into nine series, with early series focused on lyrics, organized by album, single, or notepad, and later series including business correspondence, publicity materials, personal effects, and audiovisual materials. 

Larry McMurtry Papers
The Larry McMurtry Papers, 1968-1987, is largely comprised of the original typescript for McMurtry's essay, "Walter Benjamin at the Dairy Queen,” which includes handwritten corrections by the author. There is also a handful of correspondence, most of which relates to the acquisition of this collection. 

Ralph Sipper Collection of Larry McMurtry
The Ralph Sipper Collection of Larry McMurtry Collection, 1982-2018, is comprised of over 100 letters from Larry McMurtry to Ralph Sipper. Arranged chronologically, they document McMurtry’s practice of and thoughts on book selling and buying. Frequent topics include the sale of screenplays, his work in the film business, and mutual acquaintances in the literary world. 

Angela Shelf Medearis Papers 
The Angela Shelf Medearis Papers, 1984-2001, documents the career of award-winning children's book writer, featuring drafts, typescripts, correspondence, photographs, and publicity materials related to her books, articles, poetry, and video projects. It also offers insight into her creative process and includes letters from readers, publisher communications, awards, and personal items. 

Jay Papers Milner
The Jay Milner papers, 1960-1994, include newspaper clippings of his columns and reviews, personal correspondence, photographs, and printed materials. The collection highlights Milner’s journalism career with chronologically arranged clippings, extensive personal letters mainly from friends, a small set of photographs of literary figures, and printed ephemera related largely to Texas music events. 

Margaret Moser Collection
The Margaret Moser Collection, 1974-2014, documents her influential role in the Austin and Texas music scenes. It includes photographs of notable musicians, correspondence, writings, printed materials, publications, event posters, and cassette tapes. Moser’s career as a music critic, promoter, and mentor is reflected through extensive materials related to her work at the Austin Chronicle, the Austin Music Awards, and the South Texas Popular Culture Center.

Jody Fischer Collection of Willie Nelson 
The Jody Fischer Collection of Willie Nelson, 1976-2003 (bulk: 1983-1988), includes photographs, audio and video tapes, personal papers, and memorabilia. Fischer, a musician and writer, was closely involved with Nelson’s career as his assistant. The collection reflects her unique perspective on Nelson’s music, Farm Aid activism, and personal life. Willie Nelson Papers
The Willie Nelson Papers, 1975-1994, documents Willie Nelson’s multifaceted career and personal life through handwritten song lyrics, screenplays, correspondence, concert programs, posters, promotional items, memorabilia, and financial records. It highlights Nelson’s work as a songwriter and performer, his marketing and publicity, and his involvement with Farm Aid, including detailed records of the charity’s concerts and fund distribution. The collection also covers Nelson’s financial troubles with the IRS. 

Willie Nelson Recording Collection
The Willie Nelson Recording Collection, 1954-2010, documents the career of the Texas singer-songwriter with 877 recordings in formats including LPs, cassettes, CDs, VHS, and DVDs. It features Nelson’s own works and guest appearances, highlighting rare and unreleased material, early singles, live recordings, and studio demos. 

Aubra Nooncaster Collection 
The Aubra Nooncaster Collection, 1938-1992 (bulk:1980-1990), is organized into four series: Correspondence, Writings about Nooncaster, Writings by Nooncaster, and Larry L. King. The correspondence includes letters to Nooncaster, many referencing Larry L. King’s Parade article, “A Coach I Can’t Forget.” Nooncaster’s published poetry and drafts are featured in the writings series. 

New Braunfels Museum of Art and Music Collection
New Braunfels Museum of Art and Music Collection, 1977-2006, comprises research and exhibition materials organized by subject into four series: Austin City Limits, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Clay Blaker, and the museum itself.

Naomi Shihab Nye Papers

The Naomi Shihab Nye Papers, 1920–2018 (bulk 1960s–2018), document the life and writing career of the poet, editor, and educator. The collection contains biographical and family materials, photographs, personal and professional correspondence, diaries, notebooks, music, poetry and prose manuscripts, editor correspondence, and drafts of published and unpublished works. Additional materials reflect Nye’s extensive work as a teacher and writer-in-schools, her public appearances and awards, and the reception of her work in reviews and press profiles. Panther Hall Collection 
The Panther Hall Collection, 1963-1978, documents the country and western music scene in Fort Worth, Texas, primarily through photographs of performances and candid moments. Notable identified subjects include Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard. The collection also contains artist contracts, promotional ephemera, and a range of country music newspapers and magazines, providing a rich visual and documentary record of the era’s music culture. Joe Nick Patoski Papers
The Joe Nick Patoski Papers, 1929–1998 (bulk: 1975–1995), document the writing career, research, and music industry involvement of the journalist and author. The collection includes typescripts, correspondence, clippings, photographs, sound recordings, notes, printed material, ephemera, and artifacts, arranged in nine series. Materials reflect Patoski’s work as a writer, researcher, music manager, and critic, with a strong emphasis on Texas and Southwestern music and musicians, including extensive files on artists he managed. Eagle Pennell Collection 
The Lin Sutherland Collection of Eagle Pennell, 1977-1990, documents the career of independent filmmaker Eagle Pennell, focusing on his acclaimed film The Whole Shootin’ Match (1978), co-written and co-produced with Lin Sutherland. The collection includes scripts, screenplays, correspondence, legal and business documents, and press coverage.  

Severo Perez Papers
Severo Perez Papers, 1972-2010, document the filmmaker and writer’s work across film, television, theater, and literature. The collection is organized into six series and includes screenplays, production records, correspondence, and audiovisual materials. The largest portion relates to Perez’s 1995 film ...and the earth did not swallow him, including comprehensive documentation from pre-production to film festivals. Other notable projects include Willa Brown, Yolanda’s Story, and Plaza de la Raza. 

William Pool Papers 
William C. Pool Papers, 1845-1990 (bulk:1945-1985) document the historian’s research, writing, political interests, and personal life. Highlights include correspondence with historians and political figures like Lyndon B. Johnson; drafts and publications such as The Bosque Territory, A Historical Atlas of Texas, and Lyndon Baines Johnson - The Formative Years; and research notes on Texas and Mexican history. The collection also contains photographs, clippings from regional newspapers, maps, and historical currency.

Katherine Anne Porter (Paul Porter Collection) 
The Paul Porter Collection on Katherine Anne Porter, 1940-1998 (bulk: 1980-1990)  features correspondence, recipes, notes, photographs, invitations to Katherine Anne Porter conferences and dinners, published materials, and an artifact. 

Katherine Anne Porter (Roger L. Brooks Collection) 
Roger L. Brooks Collection of Katherine Anne Porter 1972-1977 (bulk: 1976-1977) includes correspondence, interviews, photographs, and books documenting Katherine Anne Porter’s connection to Texas in her later years. Key items include letters to Dr. Roger L. Brooks reflecting her interest in returning to Texas, correspondence from literary figures honoring her 1976 honorary doctorate, and two interviews offering insights into her views on art, religion, and writing.  

Charles Portis Accessions

Papers of American novelist Charles Portis, documenting his literary career, writing process, and personal life. Materials include manuscripts of all his novels, notably drafts of True Grit, as well as research files, screenplays, articles, and an unfinished novel set in Veracruz. Also present are extensive correspondence, photographs, personal materials, Portis’s handwritten “quarter-notes,” and receipts from his travels in Texas and Mexico.

Ron Querry Papers
Ron Querry Papers, 1951-2006, document the life and work of the Choctaw author from his early writings through his published career. The collection includes correspondence, manuscripts, notes, drafts, published works, photographs, audiovisual materials, artifacts, subject files, and memorabilia, with significant contributions from his wife and collaborator, photographer Elaine Querry. His works Death of Bernadette Lefthand and Bad Medicine, as well as his memoir, I See by My Get-Up are well-represented.  

Raw Deal Collection 
The Raw Deal Collection, 1972-1983, documents the culture and operations of the iconic Austin restaurants The Raw Deal and Another Raw Deal. Featuring photographs, ephemera, correspondence, newsprint, and artwork, the collection captures the restaurants' role as gathering places for a diverse mix of patrons-from politicians and musicians to artists and journalists. Highlights include photographs of Ann Richards, Bob Bullock, and Jerry Jeff Walker, as well as the program from Richards’ 1982 swearing-in as Texas State Treasurer, held inside the restaurant. 

Dick J. Reavis Papers 
The Dick J. Reavis Papers, circa 1956-2003, document the career and research of journalist, activist, and educator Dick J. Reavis. The collection is especially strong in materials relating to his investigation of the 1993 Branch Davidian siege near Waco, Texas, and the development of his book The Ashes of Waco. Additional series cover Reavis's published and unpublished works, correspondence, financial and personal documents, and his extensive travel for writing assignments. Jan Reid Papers 
The Jan Reid Collection, 1974–1994 (bulk: 1976–1988), documents the career of Texas journalist and novelist Jan Reid. The collection includes working drafts, galley proofs, annotated manuscripts, photographs, reviews, and correspondence related to Reid’s books, particularly Deer in Water, and his articles for periodicals such as Texas Monthly. Also included is personal and professional correspondence, notably letters from Shelby Hearon and Ann Richards.

Jerry Retzloff Collection
The Jerry Retzloff Collection, 1973-2012, documents the marketing efforts and cultural impact of Lone Star Beer, particularly through its association with Austin’s music scene in the 1970s. Arranged in nine series: Personal Papers, Lone Star Beer, Photographs, Willie Nelson, Memorabilia, Oversized Materials, Newspapers and Magazines, Clothing, and Posters, the collection includes promotional materials, photographs, memorabilia, press coverage, and items related to Willie Nelson and other artists. 

Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson Series) Collection
Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson Collection, 2003-2013, document the creation of the series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Works represented include The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian. Materials include manuscripts, notes, publicity, promotional materials, awards, and reader response

Rick Riordan Papers
The Rick Riordan Papers, 1997-2004, document the writing process behind five of his early novels: Big Red Tequila, Widower’s Two-Step, The Last King of Texas, The Devil Went Down to Austin, and Cold Springs. The collection includes correspondence, research notes, interviews, plot maps, character outlines, and editor feedback. 

Joyce Gibson Roach Papers 
The Joyce Gibson Roach Papers, 1961-1991 (bulk: 1970-1980), document the research and writing of The Cowgirls and C.L. Sonnichsen: Folk Historian. Materials include notes, clippings, interviews, articles, brochures, letters, and audio cassettes. 

Michael Rodriguez Papers
The Michael Rodriguez Papers, 1968-1999 (bulk: 1998-1999) document his literary career and military service, spanning personal papers, writings, promotional material, photos, and artifacts. Highlights include a typescript of Humidity Moon, correspondence with Tim O’Brien, short stories on the Vietnam War, and artifacts from his military service. 

Ricardo and Harriet Romo Collection 
The Ricardo and Harriett Romo Collection, 1967-1991, includes newspaper clippings, photographs, prints, posters, and a typescript by Ramón Saldívar titled The Dialectics of Difference. Highlights include materials from Harriett Romo’s collaboration with photographer Alan Pogue on a Head Start exhibit, photos of César Chávez, and a Malaquias Montoya lithograph of Tomás Rivera.  

Miriam Sagan Papers 
The Miriam Sagan Papers, 1976-2010, document the literary, teaching, and editorial career of poet, memoirist, and educator Miriam Sagan. The collection includes personal papers, correspondence, drafts, notebooks, sketchbooks, zines, publication files, reviews, awards, and photographs. 

Winifred Sanford Papers 
The Winifred Sanford Papers, 1911-2003, document the literary career and legacy of Texas short story writer Winifred Sanford. The collection includes correspondence (notably with H. L. Mencken), manuscripts, typescripts, tearsheets, reviews, clippings, and a VHS of The Stars Fell on Henrietta, based on her story “Luck.” 

Edward Muegge "Buck" Schiwetz Collection 
The Edward Muegge “Buck” Schiwetz Papers, 1928-1979, document the career of the Texas artist, illustrator, and architectural artist. The collection includes journal articles, correspondence, photographs, and materials from five major art projects, including his work for Interwoven and the Texas Sketchbook: A Collection of Historical Stories from the Humble Way. 

Clarence Schultz Collection 
The Clarence Schultz Humor Collection, 1995-2003, documents Schultz’s research for his unpublished manuscript Texas Laughter: A Chronicle of Sixteen Humorists, 1836-2000, along with his extensive library of humor-related works.  

Selena Research Collection
The Selena Research Collection was compiled by Joe Nick Patoski documents the research and writing process behind his unauthorized biography of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla Pérez, compiled primarily between 1995 and 1996. The collection includes news clippings, court documents, interviews, manuscripts, correspondence, publicity materials, photographs, notes, and ephemera spanning from 1961 to 1997.

John Emil Sepich Papers
The John Emil Sepich Papers, 1990-1993, consist of two works of commentary by John Emil Sepich that focus on the novel, Blood Meridian, by Cormac McCarthy. Sepich published Notes on Blood Meridian in October 1993. Also included are two 1990 letters from Sepich to Bill Wittliff. Additional materials can be found here.

The Sam Shepard and Johnny Dark Collection, 1972-2011, documents the four-decade friendship between Shepard and Dark through correspondence, recorded conversations, photographs, audio tapes, and video materials. The collection offers personal insights into their lives and creative collaboration, featuring letters, transcribed dialogues, annotated photos, digitized audio recordings, and a documentary film. Sam Shepard Papers
The Sam Shepard Papers, 1980-1999, document the career of the playwright, author, and actor. The collection includes annotated drafts, notes, typescripts, playbills, correspondence, rehearsal schedules, reviews, audiovisual materials, and publicity related to Shepard’s plays, short stories, novels, and films. Additional materials cover unpublished works, notebooks, literary criticism, interviews (notably with Bob Dylan), readings, awards, clippings, and collaborations. 

Edwin "Bud" Shrake Papers 
The Edwin “Bud” Shrake Papers span 152 boxes documenting his 58-year career as a sportswriter, journalist, fiction and non-fiction writer, and screenwriter. Organized into eight series, the collection includes manuscripts, drafts, research files, correspondence, financial and legal records, personal papers, and materials related to other writers. Highlights include extensive drafts of his published and unpublished works, screenplays, plays, and a vast collection of correspondence. 

Marc Simmons Accessions

The Marc Simmons Accessions span from 1608-2018 (bulk: circa 1950-2018) cover the research interests of the New Mexican historian. The majority of materials consist of subject files covering New Mexico and the US West from the colonial period until the present. These files contain notes and drafts by Simmons and others, correspondence between Simmons and others, photographs, clippings, and articles.

Small Manuscript Collections (SWWC-150) 
Small Manuscript Collections consists of material acquired by The Wittliff either through gift or purchase that are not part of a larger collection. They are often individual items or small groups of items relating to a particular author, musician, photographer, or topic. C. W. Smith Papers 
The C. W. Smith Papers includes a screenplay for his 1975 novel Country Music, a typescript of his 1989 novel Buffalo Nickel, and a 1989 Poseidon Press catalog featuring an excerpt from Buffalo Nickel. 

J. Edwin Smith Collection
The J. Edwin Smith Collection, 1958-1992, includes photographs, correspondence, and political campaign material for his run for the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas in 1958. 

Hart Stilwell Papers
The Hart Stilwell Papers, 1963-1975, comprises two boxes of manuscripts, clippings, published articles, correspondence, photographs, and artifacts. It documents Stilwell’s unpublished book drafts and essays at the time of his death, alongside personal materials and photographs, many by his friend Russell Lee. Key works include drafts of The Great White Immaculate Bird and Other Toys, Glory of the Silver King, and Old Two Toes 

Jesse Sublett Papers 
The Jesse Sublett Papers document his dual career as a rock musician and writer through manuscripts, screenplays, drafts with handwritten annotations, cartoons, clippings, correspondence, photographs, ephemera, and sound recordings. The collection is arranged in eleven series covering early works, Austin Chronicle articles, drafts, screenplays, reviews and publicity, photographs, ephemera, sound recordings from the Skunks, and music-related artifacts. 

Texas Monthly Editorial Photography Collection
The Texas Monthly Editorial Photography Collection, 1974-199, comprises 14 boxes of photographs, negatives, and related materials featured alongside Texas Monthly’s longform articles and editorial content. It includes work by notable photographers such as Geoff Winningham, Keith Carter, Joe Baraban, and others.  

Texas Monthly Magazine Archive 
The Texas Monthly Archives, 1972-present (bulk 1972-1980), document the operations and editorial process of Texas Monthly magazine from its founding onward. The collection encompasses editorial, advertising, production, publicity and marketing, and financial and circulation records. The processed portion emphasizes the Editorial Series, which is the largest segment and includes issue files and editorial research. Materials document article drafts, edits, research, fact-checking, production notes, attorney reviews, and galley proofs, as well as limited correspondence, letters to the editor, contest entries, and supporting documentation for features.

Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame Collection
Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame Collection, 1930s-1990s, includes photographs, costumes, posters, awards, and clippings featuring members of the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame. Items of note include Bob Wills’ hat and a fiddle he reportedly played, and Laura Lee McBride’s fringed leather costume.

Sergio Troncoso Papers
The Sergio Troncoso Papers, 1975-2020, document his literary career and personal history across six series: Personal Papers, Published Work, Magazine and Journal Contributions, Publicity, Reader Correspondence, and Digital Objects. The collection’s core is drafts of his major works, including The Last Tortilla and Other Stories, The Nature of Truth, Crossing Borders, and From This Wicked Patch of Dust, many with handwritten edits. It also includes early academic writings, publicity materials, fan letters, and digital files. Additional material can be found here. 

Under the Hat Productions Collection
The Under the Hat Productions Collection, 1984-2000 (bulk: 1996-1999), document the activities of the Texas-based artist management company founded by Cash Edwards and Roger Polson The collection includes promotional materials, contracts, press kits, and correspondence for artists their artists including Ray Wylie Hubbard and Terri Hendrix, as well as several market research materials and press clippings.

Sterling VanWagenen Papers 
The Sterling VanWagenen Papers, 1984-1986, contain materials from the filming of the 1985 film The Trip to Bountiful including financial papers, photographs, promotional kits, and clippings. 

Stevie Ray Vaughan Research Collection
The Stevie Ray Vaughan Research Collection documents the research, writing, and promotion of Stevie Ray Vaughan: Caught in the Crossfire, co-authored by Bill Crawford and Joe Nick Patoski. Materials include correspondence, interviews, notes, drafts, legal and financial documents, and photographs, spanning 1964-1995, with a focus on 1990-1993. The collection also features extensive audio and video recordings. Highlights include rare bootlegs, candid photos, and interviews with key figures from Vaughan’s life and the Austin blues scene.

Tino Villanueva Collection 
The Tino Villanueva Papers, 1994-1998, include eight annotated pages of Villanueva’s working drafts for the poem Cuento del Cronista, published in Crónica de mis años peores (Chronicle of My Worst Years, 1994), along with one publicity photo, and two posters promoting his lectures. 

Russell (R. G.) Vliet Papers 
The Russell G. (R. G.) Vliet Papers, 1900-1990 (bulk: 1960-1984) document the creative and personal life of the Texas author through notes, drafts, typescripts, correspondence, photographs, clippings, and artifacts. The collection reveals Vliet’s detailed writing process across multiple genres-novels, plays, poetry, stories, and essays-and includes extensive material on his final novel, Scorpio Rising 

Jerry Jeff Walker Collection
The Jerry Jeff Walker Collection includes handwritten lyrics and chord notations for the country-western song “Charlie Dunn,” written in the 1970s by Jerry Jeff Walker in tribute to the renowned Texas bootmaker. Also included is the first pair of custom lizard-skin boots Dunn made for Walker. 

Frank Waters Papers
The Frank Waters Papers, 1948-2006, documents the life, work, and legacy of author Frank Waters, with a focus on the activities of the Frank Waters Foundation. Materials include correspondence, writings by and about Waters, organizational records, tributes, and conference materials. Also included are items related to Waters’ associates, photographs, publications, and bronze artifacts.  

Donley Watt Papers
The Donley Watt Papers span 1970-2004 and document the literary career of the Texas author. The collection includes correspondence, photographs, notes, clippings, drafts, and digital media, with a focus on Watt’s published works including his collection of short stories, Can You Get There from Here 

Bob White Papers
The Bob White Papers, 1970-1990, document the life and career of the Texas fiddle player through letters, photographs, clippings, personal documents, and memorabilia. Highlights include materials related to his performances with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, The River Road Boys, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The collection also reflects White’s family life and his wife’s role as his manager. Extensive photographs and promotional materials illustrate White’s influence in Western swing and country music.

Barbara and Fred Whitehead Collection
The Barbara and Fred Whitehead Collection contains posters, woodblocks, and woodblock prints created by Barbara Whitehead. Highlights include illustrations for The Good Old Boys by Elmer Kelton, Clem Maverick by R.G. Vliet, and The Grands by Carolyn Osborn.   

William D. Wittliff Papers 
The Bill Wittliff Papers, 1968–1995, document the multifaceted career of author, photographer, publisher, and screenwriter Bill Wittliff. The collection encompasses materials related to his work in photography, book publishing, screenwriting, and filmmaking. Formats include correspondence, typescript drafts, bibliographies, woodcut blocks, illustrations, photographs, screenplay drafts, film storyboards, and other production materials. 

Michael Zagst Papers 
The Michael Zagst Papers, 1985-1996, documents the literary career of Houston-born novelist Michael Zagst, including manuscript and typescript drafts of his published novels, unpublished works, plays, screenplays, and short stories. It contains editorial correspondence with his publisher Donald I. Fine, materials related to his role as a co-judge for the Texas Institute of Letters short story competition, and applications for literary fellowships.
