Last year was a watershed moment in The Wittliff’s 33-year history, as we completed the first phase of a multi-million dollar renovation and expansion project. As a result, we added 10,000 square feet of space, including a new entryway, three all-new galleries and a doubling of our Lonesome Dove exhibition. The Wittliff is bigger and better in every respect.
As part of “The Campaign for Tomorrow’s Wittliff,” gallery naming opportunities are still available, beginning at the $150,000 level. All proceeds raised during the campaign will help build a war chest dedicated to the purchase of important new collections, thus strengthening our role as the go-to steward of the creative legacy of Texas, the Southwest, and Mexico through literature, photography, music, and film.

The Wittliff is excited and pleased to announce that Texas music now has a new home, taking its place alongside our acclaimed Southwestern Writers Collection and the Southwestern & Mexican Photography Collection.
A melting pot of musical genres exists under the universally understood phrase, “Texas music,” and our goal is to collect and celebrate the full gamut – from classic and progressive country to Tejano, conjunto, zydeco, swing, folk, blues, rock, and more. The vast musical culture that defines our region will now be preserved and shared within The Wittliff.
Future plans for the Texas Music Collection include acquiring significant collections from musical genres across the spectrum and adding a dedicated exhibition gallery in which to showcase Texas Music year-round. Hector Saldaña joined The Wittliff in 2017 as curator of the collection.
The Wittliff is building a new, permanent reserve dedicated exclusively to the acquisition of materials that honor the Southwest’s inimitable spirit of creativity. Lovers of the humanities who share The Wittliff’s passion for Southwestern literature, photography, and music are invited to support the Spirit of Place Endowment. Contributors of $25,000 or more will be honored on a new donor wall within The Wittliff’s expanded and renovated space on the seventh floor of the Albert B. Alkek Library.
The Lonesome Dove Endowment is a fund dedicated to the permanent stewardship of the legacy of Lonesome Dove at The Wittliff, which is home to the Lonesome Dove Production Archive, the Lonesome Dove Exhibition Gallery, and the Lonesome Dove Photograph Collection.
Lonesome Dove is woven into the fabric of The Wittliff thanks to the far-sighted vision of the film’s screenwriter and co-executive producer, Bill Wittliff, and his wife Sally, who founded The Wittliff Collections at Texas State in 1986.
As a premier research archive, exhibition gallery, and library reflecting the cultural essence of the Southwest, The Wittliff hosts visitors from across campus and around the globe, many of whom come solely to view material from the Lonesome Dove Production Archive – the world’s only body of work memorializing the award-winning miniseries that has become the cinematic anthem of the American West.
The endowment will support in perpetuity the conservation and preservation of material in the Lonesome Dove Production Archive while also ensuring the legacy of this timeless western lives on for future generations through expanded exhibitions, free educational outreach programming, and digital resources.
Thanks to the generosity of donors who give to the General Support Fund, we are able to offer free world-class programs for the university community and members of the public. The General Support Fund also helps underwrite exhibitions, digitization projects, conservation, preservation, and the stewardship of our collections.
