Award-winning author Jim Sanderson was born in San Antonio. Much of his work is set in Texas, particularly West Texas and border.

 

Sanderson has published nine books and dozens of highly acclaimed short stories. He won the 2012 Kay Cattarulla Award from the Texas Institute of Letters for  his short story "Bankers," published by Descant. 

 

His first novel, El Camino del Rio, won the 1997 Frank Waters Prize, and was published by The University of New Mexico Press. That book introduced Sanderson’s bi-cultural protagonist, Dolph Martinez. An excerpt from El Camino del Rio appears in Lone Star Sleuths: Crime Fiction from Texas, an anthology published in the Wittliff Collections’ Southwestern Writers Collection Book Series.

 

Sanderson’s other novels include Safe Delivery (2000, finalist for Violet Crown Award) and La Mordida (2002) from the University of New Mexico Press. Nevin’s History, a historical novel, was published by Texas Tech University Press, 2004. In 2011 Sanderson published his newest book in the Dolph Martinez/Jerri Johnson detective series, Dolph's Team (Ink Brush Press.)

 

Sanderson’s other books include a collection of short stories, Semi-Private Rooms (1994), winner of the Kenneth Patchen Prize for fiction, sponsored by Pig Iron Press.  He’s also published a collection of essays, A West Texas Soapbox (Texas A&M University Press, 1998.) His newest short story collection, Faded Love (Ink Brush Press, 2010) was a finalist for the 2010 Texas Institute of Letters' Jesse Jones Award for best book-length fiction.

 

Sanderson has a Ph.D. in fiction writing from Oklahoma State University. He is Professor of English at Lamar University in Beaumont. He teaches fiction writing and American literature and film and currently serves as the Writing Director within the English Department. He is the 2002 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer at Lamar University.  In 2006 he was selected as that year's University Scholar.
